Help Paying for a Roof in Champaign-Urbana
City grants, USDA repair loans, insurance and financing: what each one covers, who qualifies and who to call. No program guarantees a free roof, so start with the route that fits your situation.
Which route fits your roof.
Most homeowners land in one of three situations. Each has a different first call.
Storm damage
Hail or wind did the damage. Homeowners insurance often covers it, minus your deductible. Start with your policy and a documented inspection.
How the insurance route worksLimited income
Your household income is low or moderate, and the roof is a health or safety problem. City, state and USDA programs may help, though most have waitlists or set windows.

A right-sized fix often costs far less than a new roof: a repair, or a Roof Maxx treatment on aging shingles that are still unbroken. Financing can spread out a full replacement.

Every program here is income-limited, and most have more applicants than money. Call before you count on one, and check the official page for current rules.

Storm damage? Start with your insurance.
Homeowners insurance often covers damage from hail or wind, but usually not wear and tear or a lack of maintenance, and you still owe your deductible. Check your policy, and report damage promptly.
We inspect the roof, photograph what we find, separate storm damage from normal wear and give you a written scope to share with your adjuster. The decision to file is yours.

Spend less, or spread the cost.
Right-size the fix
Many leaks need a repair, not a new roof. If your asphalt shingles are aging but still in good condition, Roof Maxx rejuvenation is another option: Roof Maxx puts it at up to 80% less than a full replacement. A free inspection tells you which fits.
Finance a replacement
Financing is available through Hearth, with soft-credit pre-qualification that does not affect your credit score. We walk you through the options during your free assessment.
How Hearth financing worksFinancing is offered through Hearth. Hearth is a technology company, licensed as a broker where state law requires; it does not make loans or credit decisions. Rates, terms, amounts and fees are provided by Hearth's lending partners and depend on your credit, income and loan amount. NMLS ID# 1628533.
Questions about roof help.
No program guarantees a free roof. USDA's Section 504 grant pays up to $10,000 to remove health and safety hazards for homeowners 62 and older with very low income in eligible rural areas. Some cities, including Urbana, Champaign and Decatur, run grant programs for income-qualified homeowners. Funding is limited, and many programs have waitlists or set application windows.

Not sure which route fits?
A free inspection tells you what the roof needs and what it should cost, so you know what to ask a program or an adjuster for.
